Dental Sealants

Young boy smiling with healthy teethWe can provide a simple preventive solution to protect vulnerable areas of your teeth. The points and chewing surfaces of our teeth are designed to bite and break down food, but sometimes they can also capture food or cause debris to become stuck, leaving us vulnerable to decay. Dental sealants are a protective coating that can be placed in these tiny places to protect areas that are in danger of cavities. Our team at Chicago Dental Esthetics can help you have a healthier mouth with the application of dental sealants.

The enamel of our teeth are wonderfully designed with both sharp and flat areas allowing us to bite and then chew our food before swallowing. This great evolutionary advantage allows us to eat the food we need to live. We want to keep these chewing surfaces healthy and prevent cavities from forming in our back teeth. We can do this by preventing food or particles from getting stuck in the crevices of our enamel.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are a thin varnish coating that we can apply to spots on your teeth that are at high risk of developing decay. It is a painless process to apply dental sealants. We begin with reviewing the teeth, particularly the molars, to spot those areas with most need. We then perform a dental cleaning by a professional hygienist to remove debris and plaque from the area. The next step is the application of a light acidic wash. It will create a slight etching to the enamel surface to allow for better adhesion of the sealant product. The etching solution does not damage the enamel, it simply roughens it. The sealant varnish is then painted onto the teeth with a small brush. The varnish is hardened in place with a blue laser light. Your dental sealant treatment should remain in place for several years, though we will check the status of it with each future dental exam.

Why Have Dental Sealants?

We recommend dental sealants because we are seeing the positive effects they provide. Increasingly, patients with a high risk of cavities are not developing them. More and more, children with sealants are reaching adulthood without ever experiencing a cavity. The healthier we can keep teeth now, the longer you are more likely to have them in the future.

Who Can Have Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants can be provided to any patient we see could benefit from them. In general, we recommend dental sealants for all children and adolescents who have grown their adult molars. We also recommend them for any patient who is at higher risk. This may be due to simply the shape of their teeth, or it may be a patient with either physical or mental medical issues, or it may be a patient who just suffers from tooth decay. We are happy to review your teeth and discuss the application of sealants as a preventive measure for you. We invite you to contact our office for more information.
